1.Welcome Remarks

  • Approve Agenda – Motion to approve – Approved.
  • Approve Minutes from Sept 18 – Motion to approve. Approved.
  • Minutes have been uploaded on LPCI School Council Website for all past meetings

2. Student Council Report

  • Haunted House is main event. Oct 31 – second period into lunch. Drama dept participating.

Basement hallway and out to parking lot. A fundraiser will be in parking lot. Selling food – pls

bring cash to purchase food.

  • Spirit Day – Oct 5. Next one TBD for early Nov.
  • Orange Shirt Day. September 29. Outside assembly and reflection with moment of slience. Written reflections from students put into a collage.
  • LPTV – working on broadcasting channel for school. Pre-game / Post game interviews with players/teachers and other event awareness.
  • Food drive from bbq – raised $1053.00 and a van load of food for NYHarvest Food Bank.
  • SPC Card sales continuing.
  • Lawrence Leaders
    • Equity council holding multi-cultural day – date tbd.
    • Model UN looking to fundraise. Next mtg on Oct 27
    • Nov 20th is charity week. Charity form is live to allow students a voice in deciding charities that LPCI will sponsor. Looking to partner with a local community charity. Tickets to participate in events will be available on SchoolCash online.
    • Intramurals – Tues-Thur. Ultimate frisbee and volleyball currently.
  • School improvement plan (that is revisited every 3 years) is currently being finalized. Student council met with admin to give a voice to the students.

3.Principal’s Report: For more detail on comments below, please refer to THE EYE ON LPCI

  • Thanks to Kevin Lau for setting up hybrid model for our mtg. Additionally, Kevin handles 1-1 computer devices for students; building a new website that is conducive to giving info to parents and show off what school is doing; inventory of tech items on site.
  • Need a teacher rep for student council.
  • Orange Shirt Day Sept 29. Entire school went outside and participated in a reflection of the land that the school is on and then asked to document their experiences. This exercise will be repeated with parents/council as learning is meant to go student/staff/broader community. This will occur in Spring 2024.
  • Safety of students and community is foremost regarding world events of last week. Message sent out to families to ensure that they knew we are monitoring the school and guidance is available to students. LPCI will continue to be proactive to ensure safety and well-being of all students.
  • School Improvement Plan 2023-2026 has been completed. The Plan is a living document and can be subject to edits if required. Document incorporates 4 pillars – equity, achievement, well-being, indigenous education. Ensuring that every dept has same 4 pillars. Asking School Council and Student Council to develop same principles. Keep everyone on the same page.
  • Student devices will be distributed week of 31 after they arrive and are inventoried.
  • Prime Ministers Award – please nominate if there is a staff member who you feel deserves this recognition. Deadline for nominations Link in the Eye. Award is only available to teachers at the school and not administrators.
  • Unsanctioned events taking place using LPCI logo. Will always highlight these events to parents. LP will not have a dance or semi-formal. Student safety and liability cannot be ensured and too difficult to host. This is a common agreement among mid-town schools. Other events for students to socialize – talent shows, café, movie nights, etc.
  • P-T interviews November 2.
  • Math dept (each term) will be putting on a webinar around Math and the study of Math at LP. DATE: October 23 via Zoom 6-7pm.
  • Swimming Pool update: LPCI pool currently unavailable. Swim team will use Glenview Pool. Must ensure we have lifeguard still on-site. Due to our pool closure, TDSB could repurpose our lifeguard to another school. Further Info will be communicated to parents.

Fundraising

  • Holiday Tasting Tour. Second annual will be held Wed Nov 22. Restaurants will not pay to participate this year, instead parent and student community will be charged for ticket at a break-even cost. 5:30-7:30 Both gyms will be in use. One for restaurants and other for vendors and entertainment. Seating will be available.

Parent Engagement/Welcome

  • Hosted grade 9 welcome at curriculum night.
  • School Council Innovation Grant (PRO – Parents Reaching Out) $1500 grant to fund an initiative that meets criteria. This grant targets initiatives for parents/families – not student-based. Committee is currently researching an interactive panel of multi-faith representation with idea to help our community recognize the sameness instead of our differences. Create unity. Deadline for application is Oct 31.

Grade 12 : Webinars

  • Preparing for university. Over 280 ppl online. Summary will be put on website asap.
  • TBD Nov 2023 – ways to pay for university webinar Summary of last years talk on our website.
  • Third webinar in new year talking to recent lp grads about university experience.
  • Webinars cannot be recorded as the speakers have private business.

Student Enrichment

  • Voted to set aside $4000 for this school year. Staff and teachers come forward with suggestions and fill in form requesting funds. Form submitted to council and Principal to discuss. All areas of the school to be supported. Inaugural program.

Wellness

  • Lpciparentcouncil on Instagram. Supportive and informative posts.
  • Guidance dept is always available to students. They are a fantastic resource.

Marketing/Communications

  • No update currently.

Environmental Protection

  • City of Toronto has a grant for Youth Climate Action.
  • Question re Greenhouse – is there one on property already? We have a greenhouse on second floor – original building – needs revamp and equipment. Need to do a 360 on it. Funds through direct donation can go towards greenhouse refurb.
  • April Earth Day to prepare something for students to acknowledge.

Equity

  • No update currently.

Safe and Caring

  • Intense law enforcement in our area not related directly to LP but the ongoing concerns within Toronto. Principal to set up mtg with safe and caring committee.

Volunteer Coordination

  • List compiled on Curriculum Night. Approx 25 volunteers signed up. Need to send email to volunteers re Nov 22 event.

5. Treasurers’ Report

  • Full Treasurers’ report to be posted on lpschoolcouncil.ca
  • Oct 4 – Big cheque for $10K to LP. Previously raised funds are now in process and working for the kids in the school. This money had been raised last year. Small portion $4K is for student fund.
  • Financial health – $22K in one acct. $1K in other for website development. 12K left will be approved for student enrichment of $4K from there. Money always set aside to ensure that all students can participate regardless of their economic circumstances.

6. Other Business

  • Drama Dept. Dinner Theatre. Alex Stamp asked to collaborate with play – dinner theatre collaboration. Council organizes dinner at intermission. Asked if possible to coordinate for Dec production of “CLUE” (Dec 10-15.) Love to do a collaboration but is timing right? Easy to do last year. Go offline with this and decide date.
  • Next Meeting tbd – original date in Nov too close to Holiday Tasting Tour. Hybrid Format will be available for participants.
